Change Word 2007’s Default Save Format

by rhyttinen on March 3, 2008

When saving a document, Word automatically defaults to the new .docx format.  If you regularly exchange Word documents with users who are still using a previous version of Word or prefer their documents in another format such it Rich Text, it can be a bit annoying to continuously change the file format when saving.  However, you can change Word’s default save options to save new documents in another format.

To save Word’s default file save option:

  1. Click the Microsoft Office button on the Ribbon.
  2. Click the Word Options button.
  3. Click Save category in the left pane.
  4. Click the “Save Files in this Format” drop-down list and choose the desired file format.
