How to Speed Word 2008 Startup

by rhyttinen on March 5, 2008

Many people have been experiencing extremely long startup times for the new Office 2008 applications. Initially, my startup time for Word was over 2 minutes – and this is with a brand new Mac! Apparently, the one of the lag issues results from Word’s font preview feature.

With a couple of minor adjustments in Word Preferences, I was able to change the startup time to a few seconds.

  1. With Word open, select Word > Preferences from the menu.
  2. Click General in the Word Preferences windows.
  3. Uncheck the box next to WSYSIWYG font and style menus.
  4. Uncheck the box next to Show Project Gallery at startup.
  5. Click OK
  6. Close and restart Word.

The application launch time should be considerably improved.
