Apple has just released the latest version of its Web browser, Safari 3.1 for both Windows and Mac. According to Apple, Safari loads Web pages 1.9 times faster than IE 7 and 1.7 times faster than Firefox. It will supposedly also run JavaScript up to six times faster than other browsers.
Rather than just a basic bug fix release, the new version includes several noteworthy updates. The first is CSS Web Fonts – the ability for the Web browser to display non-standard Web fonts. According to what I’ve read, the Web page will display a location for the font and Safari will then download the font as needed. Another new feature is support for CSS animation, which allows Web developers to add impressive interactive animations to their sites. Safari also now supports HTML 5 audio and video tags which eliminates the need for proprietary technologies when adding such media to Web sites.
Minor updates include: double-clicking on the Tab bar will create a new tab, preservation of metadata when dragging images from the browser window, and improved pop-up blocking.
From what I’ve seen thus far, Safari 3.1 does seem to be stable, feature-rich and much faster. You can download the new version from Apple’s Safari page on their Web site.
