PDF Shortcuts in Leopard

by rhyttinen on March 18, 2008

This is a tip that Rob Griffith posted in his Mac Tips newsletter that I have found to be extremely helpful.  I am one of those people who use keyboard shortcuts for everything possible and was delighted to find that you can now assign a keyboard shortcut to the Save as PDF command.  Using this tip, when you display the print dialog box using the Command-P keystroke combination, you can press the keystroke combination you have established to automatically open the Save as PDF dialog box.

This tip can be used with any of the PDF commands on the PDF menu from the Print Dialog Box.

To Create a Save as PDF Shortcut:

  1. Open the Keyboard & Mouse preference pane in System Preferences
  2. Click the Keyboard Shortcuts tab
  3. Click on the Plus (+) sign on the lower left to create a new keyboard shortcut to display the shortcut dialog box.
  4. Make sure the Application drop-down list remains as “All Applications”
  5. In the Menu Title box, type in the exact name of the PDF command.  In this case, it would be Save as PDF…
  6. In the Keyboard Shortcut box, type in the keyboard shortcut you want to use.  I use Command + Shift + P.
  7. Click the Add button.

To use your new shortcut, open a document in any application and then press Command + P to display the print dialog box.  When the dialog box appears, press the keyboard shortcut that you established.  The Save As PDF dialog box should appear, asking you where you want to save your PDF.
