Lining Up Numbered Lists in Word 2007

by rhyttinen on March 19, 2008

One of the pet peeves of many people who work with numbered lists in Word is that once you have 10 or more items in a list, the numbers do not line up.  Rather then line up by the period after the number, the list is aligned by the left-most character.  This looks especially sloppy once your numbering is over 99.

To line up numbers by the decimal point, use the following steps:

  1. Select the entire list.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow next to the Numbering icon on the Home Ribbon
  3. Click Define New Number Format on the bottom of the dialog box.
  4. Click the Alignment drop-down list and select Centered.
  5. Click OK to close the Numbering dialog box.

Your new number format will then be stored in the Number Library for future use.
