Automatically Updating Styles in Word

by rhyttinen on January 4, 2009

Imagine that you create a new paragraph in your document and you then transform it into a numbered list.  Lo and behold, Word then changes every paragraph in your document into a numbered list.

This may not be at all what you want.  If you have ever made a formatting change to a paragraph in Word and Word then makes the same change to your entire document, you probably have to turn off the Automatically Update feature for the selected paragraph from the Modify Styles dialog box. If this feature is selected, any change that you make to the paragraph style will automatically be made to every paragraph that is using that style.

To Turn Off Automatically Updating Styles:

1.  Click the arrow on the lower right-hand corner of the Styles panel to display the style list.

2.  Click the arrow to the right of the style you want to modify.

3.  Click Modify on the drop-down menu.

4.  Clear the check mark in the Automatically Update check box.

5.  Click OK.
