by rhyttinen on January 5, 2009

Devon Technologies has recently released an update – version 2.0 -  to DevonThink, a personal information assistant.  This is an update that I have been anxiously awaiting for quite some time.  One of the most important features of this update, is the ability to open multiple databases (DevonThink Pro & Pro Office only).  I was pleasantly surprised to discover that not only can I now open more than one database at a time, but they are all displayed in the same window allowing me to quickly switched between them.

Some of the new features include:

  • Ability to open multiple databases
  • Ability to open multiple databases
  • Smart groups (saved searches)
  • Support for many common file formats
  • New user interface
  • Quick Look support
  • Cover Flow View
  • Tabbed viewing/editing
  • All documents stored as is (no more conversions – can be edited externall)
  • Trash Can
  • Document Templates
  • Improved RSS Feed Support

If you are not familiar with DevonThink, it is basically an intelligent database solution for your digital files.  In our goal to have a “paperless office” (or paperless as much as possbile, anyway), it is indispensable. DevonThink allows us to store all of our digital files – graphics, sound files, movie files, spreadsheets, word processing documents, pdf’s, etc. all in one repository – and retrieval of information is almost instantaneous.  You can also easily collect and store data from the Web and from your e-mail application with just a couple of keystrokes.

I have found the application to be flexible and I come up with new uses for it all the time – you are limited only by your imagination.  To check it out, visit their Web site at:  http://www.devon-technologies.com/
