Creating a Table of Contents in Word 2007

A Table of Contents makes it easy for your readers to quickly find specific part of your document and is essential to include is you have a long document with several chapters or sections. Word 2007 now includes handy TOC Styles that you can insert with just a click of a mouse.

If you did not use an outline for your document headings and subheadings, you will first need to apply a heading style such as Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. to all headings and subheadings that you want to be displayed in the Table of Contents. To insert a Table of Contents into your document, click the Table of Contents button on the References Ribbon and choose the desired style from the gallery. To insert a custom Table of Contents, click Insert Table of Contents from the Table of Contents button menu and select any desired styles and formatting.

To Create a Table of Contents

  1. Apply a heading style to any heading that you want displayed in the table of contents.
  2. Set the insertion point where you wish to insert your table of contents.
  3. Click the References tab on the Ribbon.
  4. Click the Table of Contents button and click the style you want from the gallery.

To Create a Manual Table of Contents

  1. Click the Table of Contents button on the References Ribbon.
  2. Click Insert Table of Contents.
  3. Select the desired table of contents style from the Formats drop-down list.
  4. Select any desired options.
  5. Click OK.

To delete a table of contents, click the Table of Contents button and click Remove Table of Contents from the button menu.
