Time Machine Error: You do not have privileges

by rhyttinen on January 19, 2009

The other day, I unplugged my Time Machine Drive to move my computer and after reboot, I received the error:

“You do not have appropriate access privileges to save file .0023329c5127 in Folder Time_Machine_Backups. To View or Change Access Privileges, select the item in Finder and choose File > Get Info.”

Instructions to delete the offending file:

  1. Select Go > Utilities from the Finder menu and double-click the Terminal application.
  2. When the window opens, type: “cd /Volumes” (without the quotes – also, notice the space after the /) and press Return. This will switch you to the disk volumes folder.
  3. Type: “ls -al” (the l is the lowercase letter “L”) and press Return. This will list the contents of the folder. Note the name of your Time Machine Backups volume.
  4. Type “cd “, (don’t press Return yet), type the first few letters of your backup volume and then press the Tab key. The entire name of your backup volume should display on your screen. Press Return. This switches you to your Time Machine Backup volume.
  5. Type: “ls -alF” and press Return. Note the name of the offending file mentioned in the error message.
  6. Type “sudo rm” (don’t press Return yet), type the first few letters of the name of the offending file and then press the Tab key. The complete file name should appear on your screen. Press Return.
  7. Type: “ls -alF and press Return. The offending file should now be gone.
  8. Type exit and press Return. This will close the Terminal application.

You should now be able to configure Time Machine Correctly.

Good luck!
