In addition to the left and right indentations we worked with earlier, you can also create a Hanging Indent. A hanging indent allows you to indent the subsequent lines of a paragraph by one or more tab stops. Hanging indents work well for bulleted and numbered lists, allowing you to line up text under the first line of the paragraph as well as any time you want the rest of your paragraph to be indented from the first line of the paragraph. There are several ways to set a hanging indent:
- Use the Paragraph Dialog Box
- Use the keystroke combination Ctrl + T
- Hold down the Shift key and manually drag the Hanging Indent Marker on the Horizontal Toolbar
- Select Hanging Indent from the Tab Alignment button and then clicking on the Horizontal Ruler at the location where you want your hanging indent.
An example of a hanging indent:

To Create a Hanging Indent
- Click anywhere inside of the paragraph for which you want to add a hanging indent.
- Press the keystroke combination Ctrl + T (Ctrl + Shift + T removes the hanging indent).
Or
- Click the Paragraph Dialog Launcher on the Home Ribbon.
- Click the Indents and Spacing tab (if necessary).
- Choose Hanging from the Special drop-down list.
- Enter the indentation size (in inches) in the By Box.
Or
- Hold down the Shift key and manually drag the Hanging Indent marker to the desired location on the Horizontal Ruler.
Or
- Click the Tab Alignment button until the Hanging Indent icon is visible.
- Click the location on the Horizontal Ruler where you wish to set a Hanging Indent.
