Add Shading to a Paragraph in Word

One way to set one paragraph apart from others is to apply a background color to the paragraph. Click the Shading button on the Home Ribbon and choose the desired color from the Color palette. To choose colors from a more extensive color palette, click the More Colors button.

To Add Shading to a Paragraph

  1. Select the paragraph to which you want to apply a background color.
  2. Click the Home tab.
  3. Click the arrow next to the Shading button on the Paragraph command set and click the desired color on the Color palette.
  4. If you don’t see the color you want, click the More Colors option and click the desired color from the extended color palette.
  5. Click OK.

Tip: You can also apply shading from the Shading tab of the Borders and Shading dialog box.
