When you press the Tab key in Word, your insertion point automatically moves across the page. Tabs are an easy (and recommended!) way to align columnar data on a page. The default tab stops in Microsoft Word are set for every ½-inch. At some point, you will most likely need to change the default setting and add your own tabs. You can set tab stops by using either the horizontal ruler that appears on top of your screen or by using the Tabs dialog box. In this lesson, we will work with the horizontal ruler.
It is important to note that there are several different types of tab stops. These are:

You choose the type of tab stop by clicking on the Tab Alignment button on the top left of your screen, to the left of the horizontal ruler. Clicking on the Tab Alignment button advances from one tab type to another until you see the desired tab type. Next, click the desired location of the tab on the Horizontal Ruler. (if the Horizontal ruler is not visible, click the View/Show Ruler button on top of the vertical scroll.

Once you have set a tab, you can easily adjust its location by clicking on the tab and then dragging it to a new location. While working with tabs, it’s a good idea to show your paragraph marks so you can see the tab stops in your document. You can show or hide the Paragraph marks by clicking on the Show/Hide Paragraph button on the Ribbon.
