Changing the Postion of Tabs in Word

In yesterday’s post, we looked at how to set tab stops in Word. You may at some point however, need to modify the tabs that you set. Changing the position of tabs couldn’t be easier – simply click on the tab in the Horizontal Ruler and drag it to a new location! Note however, that if you have a columnar list of data with a hard return at the end of each line, you will need to first select all the rows of data before you move the tab; otherwise, you will change the tab position only for the sentence that contains the insertion point.

To Change the Position of Tabs

  1. Highlight the rows of data whose tab stops you wish to modify.
  2. Click the tab stop on the Horizontal Ruler that you wish to move and hold down the left mouse button.
  3. Drag the tab stop to the new location on the Horizontal Ruler.
  4. Release the mouse button.
