Adding Headers and Footers in Word

Often, you may have information that you want to appear at the top or bottom of every page, such as page numbers, document name, a company name, a company logo, or the document location. Headers repeat information at the top of every page and Footers repeat information at the bottom of every page. You can add a Header or Footer to your document from the Insert tab. Click on the Header or Footer button to display a list of built-in headers or footers from which you can choose. After you insert a header or footer, added your text and closed the Header and Footer window, your document will be displayed in Print Layout view, allowing you to see the header and footer sections of your document.

Once the Header/Footer is activated, you can type your text directly into the Header/Footer window. Additionally, you can access the Ribbon, allowing you to insert a variety of special codes such as page number, current date and time, etc. Clicking on the Go to Footer or Go to Header button allows you to jump back and forth from Header view to Footer view.

To Create a Header and Footer

  1. Click the Insert tab.
  2. Click the Header or Footer button on the Ribbon.
  3. Click the desired built-in header or footer from the gallery.
  4. Type your text in the Header or Footer window or choose the appropriate command button (Date & Time, Page Number, etc.) from the Ribbon.
  5. To switch between the header and footer, click the Go to Header or Go to Footer button on the Ribbon.
  6. When finished, click the Close Header and Footer button on the Ribbon
    Or
Double-click anywhere outside of the Header or Footer window.
