Setting Default Paste Options in Word 2007

by rhyttinen on August 31, 2009

Whenever you copy text from one Word document to another, the pasted text keeps its original formatting. Word does provide a Smart Tag when you paste text, asking you whether you want to keep the source formatting, match the destination formatting or change the format to plain text.

If you tend to use the “Match Destination Formatting feature” (like I do) or the plain text feature regularly, you can change the default paste option to either of these two options, rather than having to use the Smart Tag for each cut/copy and paste instance.

To change the default paste format to “Match Destination Formatting”:

  1. Click the Microsoft Office button.
  2. Click the Word Options button.
  3. Click the Advanced category in the left pane.
  4. Under the Cut, Copy, And Paste section, click the Pasting From Other Programs drop-down arrow and select Match Destination Formatting (this is if you tend to copy/paste data between between different applications – such as PDF’s to Word, PowerPoint to Word, etc.).
  5. Under the Cut, Copy, And Paste section, click the Pasting between Documents drop-down arrow and select Match Destination Formatting (this is if you tend to copy/paste data between Word documents).

  6. Click OK when finished.
