Turn off AutoCorrect Features in Word 2007

by rhyttinen on September 3, 2009

I have heard many people complain that Word inserts things into their document that they have to constantly delete. For instance, Word will automatically start numbering sentences for you….or Word automatically capitalizes the first letter of a sentence when that is not always what they want.

This is Word’s AutoCorrect feature in action. AutoCorrect is designed to make things easier for you as you work by automatically correcting and/or formatting items in your document. But if you do not appreciate Word’s helpfulness, you can easily turn off the features you do not want Word to correct or format without your permission.

To turn off the AutoCorrect features:

  1. Click the Microsoft Office button
  2. Click the Word Options button.
  3. Click the Proofing category in the left pane.
  4. Click the AutoCorrect Options button.
  5. Uncheck the Options that you do not want.
  6. If you do not want Word to replace text while you are working, make sure to uncheck the “Replace text as you type” checkbox.
  7. Click the other tabs (AutoFormat, AutoFormat as you Type, Smart Tags and Math AutoCorrect) and uncheck any options you do not want.

Hi, im working on a 2007 word document and the table of contents starts with Roman numerals which i need in lower case, but every time i try to print it they turn to uppercase. I’ve tried changing the options on auto correct to no avail

Hi Declan,
We no longer have 2007 installed on our machines but I was able to accomplish what you wanted in Word 2010. What you have to do is change the numbering format of the style upon which the TOC is based. Here are the steps that I used:

1. Right-click the table of contents and choose Edit field.
2. Make sure TOC is selected in the Field window and then click the Table of Contents Button.
3. Click the Modify button to display the Style dialog box.
4. Select the TOC style you want to modify and then click the Modify button to display the Modify Style dialog box.
5. Click the Format button and then click Numbering.
6. Choose the small roman numbers numbering format.

Hope this helps!
