Formatting Drawing Objects in PowerPoint 2007

Chances are that after drawing your object, you will want to apply formatting to it so that it blends in with the rest of your presentation or slide background. The Drawing Group on the Home Ribbon contains several tools which allow you to modify such settings as line color, width and style, fill color, etc.

Formatting Tools on the Home Ribbon

When you click an object, the contextual Drawing Tools tab appears on the top of your screen. Under this tab, you can find the same object formatting tools as under the Drawing Group on the Home Ribbon as well as additional formatting tools including various object styles that you can apply to a drawing object.

You can see a preview of most formatting and styles by moving your mouse pointer over any gallery thumbnail or color swatch button. The effect will be temporarily applied to the selected object. This is an example of PowerPoint’s Live Preview feature.

To Apply Formatting to Drawing Objects

  1. Click the Home tab on the Ribbon.
  2. Click the object to activate it.
  3. To apply a fill color to the object, click the Shape Fill arrow on the Drawing group and choose the desired color from the color palette. Click Picture, Gradient or Texture to fill the object with any of these items.
  4. To apply or modify the lines or border of an object, click the Shape Outline arrow on the Drawing group and choose the options you want.
  5. To apply an effect to an object, click the Shape Effects arrow on the Drawing group, point to the desired category from the list and then click the effect you want to apply from the gallery.
  6. To apply a quick style which contains a combination of various effects, fill, and outline formatting, click the Quick Style button and choose the desired quick style from the gallery.
  7. To apply a present style to an object or to apply additional formatting objects, click the contextual Drawing Tools tab, click the Formatting tab and then make your choices.
