Disable Automatic Creation of Hyperlinks in Excel 2007

by rhyttinen on September 29, 2009

By default, whenever you type in a Web URL or an e-mail address, Excel will automatically convert it to a hyperlink. This is part of Excel’s AutoCorrect feature.

Oftentimes however, this is not what you want and you then need to go through the process of removing the hyperlinks from your cells. If you do not want Excel to create hyperlinks for you, you can disable this feature from the Excel Options area.

To Disable Automatic Creation of Hyperlinks in Excel

  1. Click the Microsoft Office button.
  2. Click the Excel Options button.
  3. Click the Proofing category in the left pane.
    Excel Options dialog box
  4. Click the AutoCorrect Options button to display the AutoCorrect dialog box.
  5. Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
    AutoCorrect dialog box
  6. Under “Replace as you type”, uncheck the box next to “Internet and network paths with hyperlinks.
AutoCorrect dialog box to remove hyperlink creation
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click OK.

Another way is to format the cell as a label by typing an apostrophe before the entry, such as ‘help@pcmcourseware.com. This will prevent Excel from automatically converting the entry to a hyperlink.

Thank you so much for this… The autogeneration of links was killing me, and figuring out where to deactivate wasn’t intuitive at all.

Glad I was able to help. Yes, I know what you mean…I find this “feature” quite annoying as well.
