Adding a Line Break to a Cell in Excel

by rhyttinen on October 8, 2009

When entering text into a cell in Excel, you are limited by the width of the cell. If the cell is not long enough to accommodate the text, the text will span into the next cell. While you can always increase the width of the cell, this may not always want you want, especially if you want your worksheet to have a consistent look.

Another option is to add a line break. A line break moves any text after the cursor to a new line in the cell – and you can insert a break anywhere you like within the cell.

To insert a line break in a cell

  1. In the Formula Bar, click in the location where you wish to insert a line break
  2. Press the Alt + Enter keystroke combination
