Create a Workspace in Excel

by rhyttinen on April 23, 2010

You may find yourself needing to compare two worksheets in the same workbook simultaneously or needing to work on two worksheets at the same time. With Excel, you can view multiple worksheets in your workbook in the same window by using the New Window and Arrange All commands on the View Ribbon. This is referred to as Creating a Workspace. You will first need to open a second window and then position the worksheets in the desired arrangement (tiled, horizontal, vertical or cascade). Once you have attained the desired window arrangement, you can save your workspace or window arrangement for the next time you open the workbook.

To Create a Workspace

  1. Open the workbook file(s) you for which you want to create a workspace.
  2. Click the View Tab on the Ribbon.
  3. Click the New Window button on the Window group to add a second window.
  4. Click the Arrange All button on the Window group.
  5. Click the check box next to Windows of Active Workbook.
  6. Click the radio button next to the window arrangement you want.
  7. Click the desired worksheet tabs in each window.

To Save a Workspace

  1. Click the View Tab on the Ribbon.
  2. Click the Save Workspace button on the Window group.
  3. Navigate to the folder where you want to save your workspace.
  4. Type the name for your workspace in the File name text box.
  5. Click the Save button.

Would be nice to add the procedures for setting the new workspace up so that it opened on start of Excel — I believe you add the link to the XLSTART folder. But I’m not really sure about how to do that so that when you save future workspaces under the same name it goes to the startup folder.

Ed –

Yes, you can indeed open a workspace file each time you start Excel. To do this, save the workspace file (.xlm file only ) in the XLStart folder. In Windows 7 or Windows Vista, this folder is located in C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Excel\XLStart.
