Introduced in the previous version of OS X, is support for RSS. With RSS support, Safari lets you view RSS feeds of articles in the browser window and includes several RSS feeds to get you started. RSS – an acronym for “Really Simple Syndication” or “Rich Site Summary” – is a new technology that allows you quickly scan large numbers of articles. Many popular Websites provide RSS feeds enabling you to keep up with the latest news and information. Using RSS feeds, you can scan articles from several Websites in one window as well as receive notification when new articles are added to a site. An RSS feed displays titles and a brief description of many articles in a list format, allowing you to decide if you wish to view the entire article.

When a Web site has an RSS feed, Safari displays an RSS icon on the right-hand side of the Address bar as shown above. Click on the RSS icon to view the feed.

Mac OS X Hints RSS Feed

On the right-hand side of the RSS feed window, Safari providess several options. You can drag the slider to modify how much of an article summary is displayed. You can also sort articles by date, time, source and whether the articles are new. You also have the ability to view recent articles for a specific time period – All, Today, Yesterday, Last Seven Days, etc. To return to normal view, click the RSS icon again.

Safari’s Bookmarks folder contains several RSS feed sites in the All RSS Feeds folder to get you started. This folder will also contain any RSS feed sites from your Bookmarks menu or Bookmarks bar that you have personally added.

An RSS feed provides the titles and summaries for many articles on a Website. Safari displays this information in a simple list from where you can search the list for articles on a specific subject, choose the length of their summaries, and sort them by date or title.

To Use RSS with Safari

Navigate to a Web site that contains an RSS feed.

Click on the RSS icon on the right side of the Address Bar.

Click on the Read More link to view an entire article.

Choose any additional sorting or viewing options in the right-hand pane of the RSS window.

To return to normal non-RSS view, click the RSS icon again.

To view a list of the RSS links on your computer, click the Show Bookmarks button and then click the All RSS Feeds folder.

I have quite a collection of RSS Feeds that I read every day and Apple Mail wasn’t just cutting it. So I tried out several RSS Readers and one stood out from the rest: NetNewsWire. The program displays all of your feeds in the left column so you can click on any feed to display the individual posts. Clicking on the Latest News Smart List will display posts for all of your feeds in one window.

What I like is the ability to categorize my folders. For instance, I have a “Mac” folder in which I store all of my Mac feeds. Then, I need only to click on the folder to display all of the feeds in one window.

Navigation is easy – click the down-arrow key on your keyboard to move from one article to another. If you want to read the rest of an article, either click the Headline or press the right arrow key and a new tab will display the full article. All open tabs are displayed in the right pane so you can quickly navigate to them. If you instead prefer to read the article in your default browser, right-click the headline and choose “Open in Default Browser”. If you prefer, you can set NetNewsWire to always load full articles in your browser from the program Preferences.

To view the comments for a feed, right-click the feed in the title list pane and chose Open Comments from the shortcut menu. There is also an option to open the Home Page for the feed.

By keeping the program open, you can always have an up-to-date list of feeds. The number of new posts is displayed on the icon in the Dock. And if you use more than one Mac, you can sync your feeds with NewsGator, an online feed reader. This way, you have access to all of your feeds when on a different machine.

In my opinion, NetNewsWire is an awesome, feature-rich RSS reader that is definitely worth a glance. It certainly makes my life a lot easier.

As I am on my computer most of the day, I depend on software to help keep me organized and focused on my task. There are a couple of great programs that are worth looking at:

OmniFocus
Put out by the OmniGroup, this is probably the most robust program out there. What I especially like is the ability to sort, filter and view your task and projects in several different way. You can also save your favorite views layout.

Things
Another powerful task management program that has just come out of Beta. I like the way it lists your tasks by Today, Next, Someday and Projects. The interface makes it easy for you to get an idea of the big picture and provides a nice overview of all of your tasks.

The Hit List
New on the scene and still in Beta, The HIt List has the potential to be a great program. The program has a nice, clean interface and is probably the most visually pleasing of the three. The layout provides a nice overview of your projects with Today’s and Upcoming projects easily accessible. No syncing yet for iPhone but supposedly, it’s coming soon.

My personal choice, because of its power is OmniFocus. Plus I really needed the ability to change the fonts which the other two do not have (supposedly, Hit List will be adding this soon). I recommend taking all three for a test drive as they all have excellent features.Similar Posts:

If you are not familiar with DevonThink, it is basically an intelligent database solution for your digital files. In our goal to have a “paperless office” (or paperless as much as possbile, anyway), it is indispensable. DevonThink allows us to store all of our digital files – graphics, sound files, movie files, spreadsheets, word processing documents, pdf’s, etc. all in one repository – and retrieval of information is almost instantaneous. You can also easily collect and store data from the Web and from your e-mail application with just a couple of keystrokes.

I have found the application to be flexible and I come up with new uses for it all the time – you are limited only by your imagination. To check it out, visit their Web site at: http://www.devon-technologies.com/Similar Posts:

If you wish to download online videos from sites such as YouTube or Google Video, you may be dismayed to discover that you are unable to view them in QuickTime. Unfortunately, Quicktime does not support FLV files at this time. However, with a combination of Perian and an additional plug-in (flv.glgenerator), you can easily view FLV files in QuickTime.

You can obtain the plug-in file from: http://homepage.mac.com/xdd/software/flv/ . The Web page is not in English but you can download the plug-in by clicking on the flv.qlgenerator link. You will then need to copy the flv.glgenerator file to the /Library/QuickLook/ folder under the Macintosh HD folder (not your user folder).
