How to delete attachments from Outlook messages

If you receive a lot of email with large attachments, these can eventually take their toll on your hard drive space as well as the size of your Outlook data file. Once you’ve saved the attachment however and no longer need to store it in Outlook, you can delete it but keep the original email. This comes in handy if the message contains important information but you no longer need the file that was attached to the message.

To Remove an Attachment from a Message:

  1. Click the attachment in the Preview pane. The contextual Attachment tab on the Ribbon will display. 

  2. If you haven’t yet saved the attachment, click the Save As icon on the Actions group of the Ribbon and then navigate to the folder where you want to save the attachment. Click Save.
  3. Click the Remove Attachment icon on the Actions group of the Ribbon. The attachment is removed but the original message remains as is.
