How to turn off the Suggested Apps on the Start Menu in Windows 10

Posted by Roger Hyttinen on

If you’re running Windows 10, you may have noticed that there is a new category on the Start menu, entitled Suggested. Beginning with a recent update of Windows 10, Microsoft is now displaying in the Start Menu suggested Apps that you might be interested in checking out. What this does, is allows app developers to get the word out about their apps in the Microsoft Store and helps you to discover new apps for Windows 10.

Now these are not paid ads (developers are not paying to be featured – at least at the time of this post) so you don’t have to worry about seeing ads for laxatives or cold remedies; in fact, many of the suggested apps listed are free.

However, if you’d rather not see these ads, you can easily turn then off.

To turn off Windows 10 Suggested Apps from the Start Menu

  1. Tap the Windows key to display the Start Menu.
  2. Right-click any of the app ads under the Suggested area.

    Turn off Suggested Apps option
  3. If you don’t want to see the particular app that is being displayed, click Don’t show this suggestion from the contextual menu. If you want to completely turn off the Suggested apps section, click Turn off all suggestions from the contextual menu.

To turn off Windows 10 Suggested Apps from the Settings App

  1. Tap the Windows key to display the Start Menu.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Personalization.

Personalization icon in the Settings app
  4. Click Start in the left pane.
  5. Click the Occasionally show suggestions in Start switch so that it is in the Off position.

You might want to leave the Suggested area on for a while though – you never know when a handy or “must-have” app will show up.
