Enable Precise Selection in Word and PowerPoint

When selecting text in Microsoft Word or PowerPoint, you may have noticed that once you select a word and continue dragging, the next word is automatically selected. In other words, Word or PowerPoint extends the selection by a word at a time rather than beginning or ending precisely where you drag.

For many people, this is just a minor annoyance, while others find it irritating. Luckily, you can turn off this "feature" from Word Options.

Quick Guide: To Enable Precise Select

  1. Click the File tab on the Ribbon to display Backstage view.
  2. Click Options in the left pane.
  3. In the left pane, click Advanced.

  4. Under the Editing Options area, uncheck the box next to "When selecting, automatically select entire word"
